Tracy Chapman, the folk singer, and country artist Luke Combs teamed up for a memorable performance of Chapman's iconic song "Fast Car" at the 66th Grammy Awards. Despite coming from different musical backgrounds and generations, the duo took the stage on February 4th for a duet rendition of the track that has brought significant success to both artists. "Fast Car" saw a resurgence on the charts when Combs released a country-infused cover in 2023.

Dressed entirely in black, Chapman began the Grammys performance by playing the distinctive opening chords on her guitar, eliciting enthusiastic cheers from the star-studded audience, including Kacey Musgraves, Taylor Swift, and Kelly Clarkson. Throughout the performance, Chapman and Combs took turns in the spotlight, seamlessly harmonizing during the chorus. As they concluded, the audience erupted in a standing ovation, with Oprah Winfrey cheering and host Trevor Noah rushing to the stage to express gratitude to the legendary Tracy Chapman. He emphasized Chapman's influence as an icon and one of the greatest artists witnessed by many. Combs considered the moment a full-circle experience and found it incredibly humbling to be associated with such a renowned artist.

The well-loved "Fast Car" is recognized for its gentle acoustic guitar melody and profound lyrics addressing family struggles, poverty, and aspirations for a better life with a loved one. Combs' cover of the song reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and earned the CMA Award for Song of the Year, marking the first time a Black woman received that accolade. According to Variety's Hitmakers list, "Fast Car" ranked as the fifth biggest song in the U.S. in 2023. Former President Barack Obama even included Combs' rendition in his summer 2023 playlist.

While it was initially announced by the Recording Academy that Combs would perform at the Grammys, Variety later revealed that Chapman would join him. Chapman, who hadn't performed publicly in several years, made a landmark appearance at the awards ceremony. "Fast Car" had previously earned Chapman a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1989, and she was nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
