The 49ers stage a comeback against the Lions in the NFC title game, securing their spot in Super Bowl LVIII.
As the clock ran down in the San Francisco 49ers' loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV, tight end George Kittle was captured on the sideline expressing his determination to return to the grand stage. After four years and a remarkable comeback on Sunday, the Niners fulfilled Kittle's pledge.
In a remarkable 34-31 comeback victory against the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game, the 49ers not only secured their return to the Super Bowl but also earned the opportunity to avenge their loss to the Chiefs on February 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Overcoming a 24-7 deficit in the first half, during which the Lions dominated by running the ball effectively and putting significant pressure on San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy, the veteran-heavy 49ers rallied. A pivotal moment came with receiver Brandon Aiyuk's 51-yard catch off a deflection from Lions cornerback Kindle Vildor's helmet. The Niners scored 17 points in an eight-minute span, tying the game. They claimed their first lead with 9:52 remaining, courtesy of a 33-yard field goal by kicker Jake Moody, making it 27-24.
To secure the victory, the 49ers achieved a crucial fourth-down stop in their own territory (the second of the game), witnessed a 3-yard touchdown run from running back Elijah Mitchell to extend the lead to 34-24, and saw tight end George Kittle recover an onside kick. This comeback matched the 2012 49ers' rally from a 17-point deficit in the NFC Championship Game against the Atlanta Falcons.
The win also carried a sense of redemption for the 1957 49ers, who, coincidentally, held a 24-7 halftime lead and went up 27-7 against the Lions in the 1957 Western Conference playoffs, only to lose 31-27.
With this victory, the 49ers now stand alone in NFL history with the most playoff wins at 38, surpassing the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers. Coach Kyle Shanahan's playoff record improved to 8-3, tying him with Tom Flores for the second-best playoff win percentage among coaches with at least 10 games. He trails only Kansas City's Andy Reid (14) in playoff wins since Shanahan assumed the head coaching role in 2017.
Making their third consecutive NFC Championship Game appearance and fourth in five years, the 49ers approached Sunday's game with the memory of last year's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles still fresh in their minds. That defeat, where quarterback Brock Purdy suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow during the first quarter, left the team regretting a missed opportunity. The Niners recognized the challenges of returning to this stage of the postseason, emphasizing the need for patience and viewing the journey as a marathon rather than a sprint, as highlighted by left tackle Trent Williams on Thursday.
The 49ers are approaching the conclusion of their marathon, and the opportunity to make amends for their loss to Kansas City in their last Super Bowl appearance adds a satisfying layer. In that game, the Niners held a 10-point lead and possessed the ball with 8:53 remaining, only to succumb 31-20 as the Chiefs scored the final 21 points.
Since then, Kansas City has made two more Super Bowl appearances, winning one and entering this one as defending champions. The initial point spread favored the 49ers by 2.5 points at ESPN BET, but it quickly dropped to -1.5 within 20 minutes of being posted, reaching as low as -1 at some sportsbooks on Sunday night. The initial total was set at 47.5.
This Super Bowl appearance marks the eighth for the Niners, tying them with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys for the second-most in NFL history. A victory against the Chiefs would secure San Francisco its coveted sixth Lombardi Trophy, equaling the record held by the Steelers and Patriots for the most in league history.
