Dwyane Wade expresses that with his recent Versace campaign, he believes he is at the beginning of a new and promising chapter in his career.
Dwyane Wade is making a return to the fashion scene, a year after his initial Versace eyewear campaign catapulted his fashion career to new heights, featuring his face on billboards. The NBA hall-of-famer, who notably wore Versace to his induction ceremony, is once again taking center stage for the renowned Milanese fashion house.
Reflecting on his first campaign, Wade admits he was uncertain about its reception, particularly in the world of fashion. Despite his confidence in the sports arena, he was unsure about his impact in the fashion industry. However, the positive feedback and unexpected encounters with men wearing Versace shades during his daily life reassured him.
Recalling the experience, he shares, "All the feedback we got—men who came up to me throughout my walks of life, guys I've seen rocking the Versace shades and the conversations I had with them—it was all so dope and unexpected." Initially thrilled to be featured on billboards and part of a Versace campaign, Wade had not anticipated the campaign's influence on men's shopping preferences or their fashion choices.
Wade is particularly enthusiastic about the upcoming second phase of the campaign launching this week. Expressing heightened anticipation, he states, "I have elevated expectations." This excitement stems not only from the prominent images expected to saturate the public sphere shortly but also from the introduction of Versace Profiles. This innovative project explores the individualities of personalities such as Wade.
When tasked with selecting items that encapsulate his essence, Wade opted for his inaugural NBA championship ring, a camera, and a photograph featuring his daughter, Kaavia. Describing the new campaign, he notes, "I feel like this one really delves a bit more into who I am as the focal point. It possesses greater depth, and I believe it's impactful."
I had the opportunity to speak with Wade during his time in New York about the campaign, his evolving style and perspective at the age of 42, and other noteworthy topics. Here are some condensed and clarified highlights from our conversation.
Regarding the campaign:
This year's campaign has a distinct look compared to the previous one. I believe it exudes a cooler—dare I say, sexier?—vibe than last year, which had a somewhat studious feel. In this one, there's a bit more laid-back attitude, whether it's a more relaxed setting or me sporting cooler Versace attire. Once I saw the images, I was completely sold. I love the way they captured this campaign.
On his role in the fashion industry:
At 42 years old and retired from professional sports, conventional expectations might dictate that it's time for me to step back. However, I feel like I'm just embarking on various aspects of my life. Over the past decade, I've been involved in the world of fashion, attending shows and sitting alongside Anna Wintour. Yet, I haven't had the brand relationships that I now enjoy. It's gratifying to be in this space and realize, "Hey, age doesn't define me. I can still be attractive and cool." Donatella Versace wants to showcase my face worldwide because our values align. While others may critique my values due to personal choices like painting my nails or supporting my transgender daughter, a brand like Versace appreciates who I am and what I stand for.
Regarding critics:
I don't pay much attention to the naysayers. In my 20s, I might have given it more significance—that's probably why, in my belief, God didn't introduce social media when I was in my 20s. That's the narrative I like to think of. At 42, I am secure in my identity as a man, and I prioritize self-care from within. If someone wants to discuss it with me, let's have a conversation. I'm indifferent; this is my personal choice, and I'm not concealing it. I'm not doing it for anyone else but myself because I genuinely enjoy it. So, the reactions don't bother me. It's interesting to talk about, but it won't alter my actions. I'll happily return to the nail salon and choose the colors that appeal to me.
Reflecting on evolving personal style with age:
As you get older, you naturally become more at ease and self-aware. It's not just David Beckham who can master it. I look at Beckham and think, "Okay, I can still keep up. There's more to explore." Nevertheless, I can honestly say that I've never felt more comfortable in this realm than I do now. I believe I'm aligned with the right brand, with hopes of continuing to create and perhaps expanding on the success we're experiencing in other areas. So, it's not just about enjoyment; it's becoming a significant aspect of how I navigate the world and how others perceive me.
