On Thursday, the Los Angeles Lakers organization revealed a statue depicting the iconic shooting guard, Kobe Bryant, donning the number 8 jersey, and raising his right hand towards the sky. Vanessa Bryant, the widow of the esteemed shooting guard, expressed that this occasion is a tribute not only to Kobe but also to the countless fans who have steadfastly supported him throughout the years.
Vanessa Bryant shared plans for additional statues at the Lakers' arena in tribute to Kobe Bryant. The upcoming statues will feature one alongside his daughter Gigi and a third depicting him wearing the number 24 jersey.
"In the ceremony, which blended poignant and lighthearted moments as a tribute to a pivotal figure for the Lakers and the NBA, Vanessa Bryant playfully mentioned that Kobe personally selected the pose for the first statue. She added that if anyone had an issue with it, they would have to accept it. The inspiration for the statue comes from an iconic moment during the 2006 Lakers game against the Toronto Raptors when Kobe scored 81 points, marking the second-highest scoring game in NBA history. Crafted from bronze and towering at almost six meters, the statue, weighing approximately 1,800 kilograms, proudly showcases the signature of sculptor Julie Rotblatt-Amrany."
The statue, dedicated to "Kobe Bean Bryant - 'Black Mamba,'" was unveiled with a prestigious gathering of guests, including his 'brother' Pau Gasol seated in the front row. On February 8, 2024, the Lakers paid a fitting tribute to Kobe by revealing this statue, a subtle homage to the two jersey numbers worn by the shooting guard (8 and 24) and the number 2, which his late daughter Gigi also sported. The Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center) now proudly features a statue of Kobe, standing alongside other esteemed purple and gold legends such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O'Neal, and Jerry West.
