During Thursday's State of the Union address in Washington, Joe Biden, at 81, defied expectations and showcased a vigorous and spirited demeanor, possibly fueled by high energy levels, captivating millions of Americans within the first few minutes. In the 68-minute speech, he passionately advocated for America, confronted Donald Trump, and skillfully addressed concerns about his age. As Republicans heckled and labeled him a "liar," Biden adeptly turned their energy against them, transforming the address into a combative and lively event reminiscent of Britain's House of Commons.

In contrast to past presidents who often relied on teleprompters, Biden, despite assumptions about his age and energy levels, engaged in a more interactive and spontaneous State of the Union, demonstrating agility and quick-wittedness. He accused Trump and Republicans of distorting the truth about the January 6 insurrection, stating, "You can't love your country only when you win." Amid jeers from some Republicans regarding border security, Biden confidently defended the bipartisan border bill, challenging dissenters with facts. He drew a clear contrast with Trump's rhetoric on immigration, asserting, "I will not demonize immigrants, saying they are poison in the blood of our country," although a reference to "an illegal" drew criticism from progressives in Congress. Overall, Biden's State of the Union address showcased a dynamic and assertive approach, defying perceptions of age and lethargy.

However, amidst the lively exchanges and excitement, the issue of Gaza loomed large. Biden's motorcade altered its route from the White House to the US Capitol due to demonstrators obstructing part of Pennsylvania Avenue. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene wore a red "Make America Great Again" cap and a "Say her name" shirt in reference to Laken Riley, a student recently murdered, allegedly by an undocumented immigrant.

Although Biden stumbled over a few words, he often benefits from the lower expectations associated with his age during significant events. With a political career dating back to his first election to the Senate in 1972, Biden took a swipe at Trump once again, presenting a contrasting narrative: "Now some people my age see a different story: an American tale of resentment, revenge, and retribution. That's not me."

This contrasted sharply with Trump's somber victory speech at Mar-a-Lago on Super Tuesday. As the event concluded, disheartened Republicans hastily left, while jubilant Democrats surrounded Biden as if celebrating a Super Bowl victory. Congressman Jerry Nadler quipped, "No one's gonna call you cognitively impaired now," to which Biden responded humorously, "I kinda wish sometimes I was cognitively impaired." Another congressman remarked, "You had the Irish fire tonight!" The lingering question remains: will this fervor endure into the future?
