Kevin Durant continued his ascent on the NBA's all-time scoring list by surpassing Shaquille O'Neal for the eighth spot after scoring 22 points in the Phoenix Suns' 115-102 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.
At 35 years old, Durant has amassed a career total of 28,610 points. Throughout this season, he has overtaken several legends in the scoring ranks, including Hakeem Olajuwon, Elvin Hayes, Moses Malone, and Carmelo Anthony.
Despite his lengthy tenure in the league, Durant, a 14-time All-Star, shows no signs of decline. The 6-foot-11 forward is currently averaging nearly 28 points per game in his 17th season, slightly above his career scoring average.
Expressing gratitude for his achievement, Durant remarked, "I'm grateful to be in the category with some of the greatest. We all know what Shaq meant to the game of basketball. So to be up there with him is a major, major honor in my opinion."
It's likely that Durant will require at least another year before reaching the seventh position on the list, currently held by Wilt Chamberlain, who amassed 31,419 career points.
During a timeout on Wednesday, the Suns aired a video message from O'Neal, congratulating Durant on surpassing him.
"You know it doesn't stop here," O'Neal remarked in the message.
LeBron James, the standout player for the Los Angeles Lakers, holds a unique distinction in NBA history as the sole individual to achieve a milestone of scoring over 40,000 points, surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar earlier in the current season. Following this remarkable feat, the third position is held by Karl Malone, followed by Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Dirk Nowitzki, and Wilt Chamberlain.
