Mercedes Mone Arrives at AEW Big Business: "This is Where I Belong"
In a monumental moment for AEW, Mercedes Mone, previously known as Sasha Banks in WWE, marked her highly anticipated debut at AEW Big Business held at the TD Garden in Boston, her hometown.
This debut solidifies her status as one of AEW's most prominent signings alongside notable names like CM Punk, Bryan Danielson, and Adam Copeland, despite their subsequent departures from the company.
Mercedes Mone, visibly moved and fighting back tears, commenced the event to a chorus of cheers chanting "CEO!" while sporting "All Elite CEO" boldly written in her hair.
Expressing gratitude to her supporters, Mone stated, "Thank you for giving me the courage and the strength to be here."
This entrance into AEW marks a significant chapter in 2024, following recent full-time additions of Kazuchika Okada and Will Ospreay.
Mone's return to the ring follows a period of absence due to a severe ankle injury sustained during a match for the NJPW Strong women’s championship against Willow Nightingale, an injury that was potentially career-threatening according to her doctor.
Reports suggest that Mone's friends and fellow WWE stars Bayley and Naomi were present to witness her AEW debut.
Her arrival coincides with a flourishing women's division in AEW, bolstered by the additions of Deonna Purrazzo and Mariah May, as well as the return of Serena Deeb. There is anticipation for the potential return of Britt Baker and Jamie Hayter this year.
Expressing her commitment to AEW, Mone emphasized, "I need to be here. I want to be here. AEW is the only place that can take this revolution global."
She also hinted at unfinished business with Nightingale and conveyed her eagerness to compete with the entirety of the female locker room.
Given Mone's background as a WrestleMania main-eventer and her likely substantial contract from AEW president Tony Khan, there's anticipation that she could be the driving force in elevating the women's division to new heights.
AEW's hiring of Jennifer Pepperman, an Emmy award-winning producer and former WWE writer, as vice president of content development, is seen as a strategic move to enhance storytelling within the women's division, a move that aligns with Mone's advocacy for advancing women's wrestling.
Mone, a trailblazer in the women's wrestling scene, previously led the women's revolution in WWE and notably, alongside Bianca Belair, became the first black women to main event WrestleMania in 2022.
