Meta's Facebook and Instagram platforms are experiencing widespread outages, affecting hundreds of thousands of users globally.

On March 5, social media platforms Facebook and Instagram, owned by Meta (META.O), experienced a global outage lasting over an hour. The disruptions began around 10:00 am ET (1500 GMT), causing hundreds of thousands of users to report issues such as being logged out and unable to log back in on the rival platform X. Downdetector.com recorded over 300,000 outage reports for Facebook and 40,000 reports for Instagram during this period.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone acknowledged the difficulties users were facing in accessing their services, stating in a post on X, "We're aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now." The social media company, whose shares had dropped by 1.5% in late morning trade, boasts approximately 3.19 billion daily active users across its suite of apps, including WhatsApp and Threads. Additionally, Meta's status dashboard indicated that the application programming interface for WhatsApp Business was encountering problems.

While the outages for WhatsApp and Threads were comparatively minor, with fewer than 200 incident reports each on Downdetector—a platform that aggregates status reports from various sources, including users—some Meta employees shared on the anonymous messaging app Blind that they encountered difficulties logging into their internal work systems. Posts on Blind indicated that this situation led to concerns among employees about potential layoffs.

The outage became one of the most talked-about subjects on X, previously known as Twitter. Elon Musk, the platform's owner, seized the opportunity to mock Meta with a post stating, "If you're reading this post, it's because our servers are working." X has encountered multiple service interruptions since Musk's $44 billion acquisition of the social media platform in October 2022. A December outage affected over 77,000 users across countries ranging from the U.S. to France.
