Last year, The Marvels grossed only $206.1 million globally, a stark contrast to the $1.1 billion garnered by its predecessor, Captain Marvel, in 2019. The sequel united Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan, and Monica Rambeau for an enjoyable but unremarkable collaboration. While reviews were generally favorable, its lackluster box office receipts may prompt Marvel Studios to shift focus away from sequels to ensure-fire hits.

In an interview with People magazine, Teyonah Parris shared her thoughts on the financial struggles faced by The Marvels.

Parris highlighted the frustration of witnessing widespread discussion and criticism surrounding the film from individuals who hadn't actually seen it. "I think there was a lot of talk, and people hadn't seen it," she expressed. "So that's frustrating, when people comment on things they haven't actually experienced." She emphasized the dedication of numerous individuals who poured their time, energy, and talent into bringing the project to fruition, underscoring the importance of giving it a fair assessment.

The actress conveyed her hope that audiences would approach the film with an open mind and give it a chance to be evaluated based on its merits. "I would hope that people would give it a fair shot by just seeing it or trying it," Parris stated. "If you don't like the first 10, 15 minutes, fair enough. Your time is precious. But we make these films so that it can be an escape from your real world in a moment for levity and joy and fantasticalness."

Parris encouraged viewers to form their own opinions after experiencing the film firsthand. "You do not have to like something, but give it a chance by actually seeing it and forming your own opinion," she urged. "And if you did, then that's fair. That's how you feel, and I cannot take that from you."

Her remarks underscored the importance of allowing each individual the opportunity to engage with the film on their own terms, respecting diverse perspectives and responses to the cinematic experience.

The release of The Marvels contributed to the narrative of "superhero fatigue" following a mixed 2023 for the genre. However, according to the star of WandaVision, the critical factor lies in the desire for quality films. She believes that audiences crave engaging storytelling and passion, regardless of whether it involves superheroes or not. Ultimately, she suggests that people are drawn to captivating movies that prioritize narrative depth over commercial success.

"I believe we often resort to the term 'superhero fatigue' as a convenient explanation, but deep down, both as a viewer and performer, I seek compelling narratives with rich characters that resonate and convey meaningful messages."
