Bates, originally an undrafted free agent signed by the Bills in 2019, caught the attention of Bears' General Manager Ryan Poles, who had previously attempted to sign him in 2022.
Bates' early years saw limited playing time as a rookie and sophomore in 2019 and 2020. However, he saw a significant increase in action in 2021, accumulating almost 300 snaps as a versatile lineman. During this period, Bates showcased his adaptability by playing various positions, including left guard (214 snaps), sixth blocker (28 snaps), center (26 snaps), right guard (24 snaps), and right tackle (2 snaps).
In 2022, Bates assumed the role of the Bills' primary right guard starter, amassing a career-high 945 snaps. Pro Football Focus attributed him a run-blocking grade of 59.0, a pass-pro score of 61.5, resulting in an overall grade of 61.8. However, with the Bills opting to enhance the position in 2023 through the drafting of O'Cyrus Torrence, Bates found himself relegated to a backup role. Now, deemed surplus, the Bills have decided to part ways with Bates.
The Chicago Bears, facing the departure of Cody Whitehair and an expected exit of Lucas Patrick in the upcoming free agency period, recognize the importance of Bates in bolstering the interior of their offensive line. Although there is still a desire to upgrade the center position, Bates serves as a valuable Plan B. The acquisition of Bates reflects a savvy move by the Bears, ensuring added depth and versatility to their offensive line.
