Benjamin Hochman of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch announced the passing of Ken Holtzman, a celebrated figure from the 1969 Chicago Cubs roster and the pitcher behind two no-hitters for the team. Holtzman passed away at the age of 78, as confirmed by family members.
On Monday, the team mourned the passing of Ken Holtzman, acknowledging him as one of the premier left-handed pitchers in Cubs history. Holtzman's distinction as one of only two Cubs pitchers to record multiple no-hitters in the live-ball era, and the sole left-handed pitcher to achieve this feat, further solidifies his legacy within the organization.
Ken Holtzman's first no-hitter occurred in August 1969 against the Atlanta Braves, a pivotal moment as the Cubs sought their first postseason berth in 24 years. Notably, this no-hitter marked only the third instance in the modern era where zero strikeouts were recorded, as Holtzman secured a shutout victory over the Braves without tallying a single strikeout.
His second no-hitter came in June 1971 during a narrow 1-0 triumph over the Cincinnati Reds. Remarkably, Holtzman himself contributed to the sole run scored in the game, according to Baseball Reference.
Throughout his illustrious career, Holtzman spent nine of his 15 MLB seasons with the Cubs, compiling a record of 80-81 alongside a 3.76 ERA. Following a trade to the Oakland Athletics before the 1972 season, Holtzman played a pivotal role in the team's consecutive World Series victories, earning All-Star selections in 1972 and 1973.
In total, Holtzman clinched four championship rings, including one with the New York Yankees, before ultimately returning to the Cubs to conclude his playing career. Across his 15 combined MLB seasons, Holtzman boasted a notable record of 174-150 with a 3.49 ERA.
Recognizing his significant contributions to the sport, Holtzman was later elected to the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame following the conclusion of his playing career.
