NBA star Anthony Davis was forced to leave the game due to an eye injury during the Los Angeles Lakers' defeat against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Anthony Davis aggravated a left eye injury and was sidelined for the second half of the Los Angeles Lakers' 127-117 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday. The injury occurred late in the first quarter when Davis was inadvertently hit in the face by Wolves forward Kyle Anderson while scoring off an offensive rebound. Davis immediately went down to the floor and shielded his face with his hands.

Davis' putback dunk provided the Lakers with a 35-30 lead with just 24.2 seconds left in the first quarter.

Following the incident, Davis headed to the locker room for assessment and did not make a return to the game. He left the arena without addressing reporters.

There's a sense of optimism within the team that Davis will be able to rejoin the lineup for the next game on Tuesday, as per a source familiar with the situation, ESPN reported.

In Davis' absence, and with LeBron James also sidelined due to flu-like symptoms, the Lakers struggled against the Timberwolves, particularly in the second quarter where they were outscored 46-27.

Lakers coach Darvin Ham acknowledged Davis' importance to the team, stating, "He's extremely valuable. Everyone around here knows that. Everything he brings on both sides of the ball, it's tough. Already being without Bron and seeing him go out, it's tough. But my hat's off to our guys. They didn't feel sorry for themselves. They kept competing all the way through."

Backup center Jaxson Hayes stepped up in a big way, scoring a season-high 19 points on an impressive 8-for-9 shooting, along with grabbing 10 rebounds and notching a career-high 5 steals while filling in for Davis. His contributions were crucial in helping the Los Angeles Lakers narrow the gap to just 4 points late in the third quarter, although Minnesota eventually pulled away again.

It's worth noting that Davis had previously suffered a corneal abrasion to his left eye during the Lakers' 128-121 loss to the Golden State Warriors on March 16.

"I just couldn't see," Davis later recounted. "The corneal abrasion was actually right in the middle of my eye. It wasn't like off to the side. So anytime I looked, it was blurry. My eye was swollen. I thought my eye was like, [torn] open. But it wasn't. It kept watering. It just felt like sand was in my eye."

Following Sunday's loss, the Lakers slipped from the No. 8 seed to the ninth in the Western Conference standings, trailing the Sacramento Kings by half a game.
